Dubai: A 20-year-old woman was killed on Friday as she attempted to cross the busy road near Al Mulla Plaza intersection.
Police said the Arab woman died instantly after she was hit by a speeding vehicle.
According to the General Department of Dubai Traffic Police, the young woman was walking near the zebra crossing at the time of the accident.
In a statement, Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Dubai Traffic Police, said that the operation room received a call at 7.45am on Friday, notifying police of the accident.
The incident occurred on Al Ittihad Road, in the direction heading from Sharjah to Dubai.
“The victim crossed the street about 40 metres away from the pedestrian crossing, but the traffic light had already signaled green for cars. The driver tried to stop the car, but unfortunately, could not avoid hitting her,” he said.
The Asian driver suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.
The case has been referred to the Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution.
Dubai Police has issued 64,620 fines to jaywalkers as of April 2016, an increase from 61,391 in 2014.
In 2015, 46 people died in run-over incidents across Dubai, an increase from 39 in 2014. In 2013, the death-toll for run-over accidents was 46.
Brig. Al Mazroui explained that Dubai Police have launched a year-long awareness campaign to prevent pedestrians from crossing in undesignated areas.
The fine for crossing the road from undesignated area is Dh200.
